A general physician plays a crucial role as the first point of contact in healthcare, managing a wide range of medical conditions across all age groups. My experience as a general physician has involved diagnosing and treating common illnesses such as infections, hypertension, diabetes, and respiratory disorders, while also identifying cases that require specialist referral. A significant part of the role includes detailed history taking, thorough clinical examination, and rational use of investigations to arrive at an accurate diagnosis. Preventive care is equally important, including patient education on lifestyle modifications, vaccination, and early disease detection. Managing chronic diseases requires regular follow-up, medication adjustment, and building long-term patient relationships based on trust. Working in both hospital and outpatient settings has strengthened my ability to handle emergencies such as acute asthma, chest pain, and trauma stabilization. It has also improved my communication skills, enabling me to counsel patients and their families effectively, especially in sensitive situations. In addition, I have been involved in coordinating care with other healthcare professionals, ensuring a multidisciplinary approach for better patient outcomes. Exposure to diverse patient populations has enhanced my adaptability and clinical decision-making skills. Overall, my experience as a general physician has been both challenging and rewarding, allowing me to contribute meaningfully to patient care while continuously improving my medical knowledge and clinical expertise.
