About

The General Practitioner (GP) provides comprehensive, patient-centred healthcare across the full spectrum of acute, chronic, and preventative medicine. The role involves the assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients presenting with a wide range of physical, psychological, and social health concerns, across all age groups. Care is delivered in line with current clinical guidelines, evidence-based practice, and professional standards, with a strong emphasis on safety, quality, and continuity of care. The GP is responsible for undertaking thorough clinical consultations, including detailed history taking, comprehensive physical examinations, and appropriate clinical assessments. Based on these findings, the GP formulates accurate diagnoses and develops individualized management plans that may include prescribing medications, initiating investigations, providing lifestyle advice, and coordinating referrals to secondary or community care services where appropriate. Prescribing is undertaken safely and responsibly, with consideration of patient-specific factors, comorbidities, and potential drug interactions. Management of long-term conditions forms a core component of the role, including regular review, monitoring, and optimisation of treatment plans to support disease control and improve patient outcomes. The GP also plays a key role in health promotion, disease prevention, and early intervention, supporting patients to make informed decisions about their health and wellbeing. Follow-up arrangements and safety-netting advice are integral to all consultations, ensuring patients understand when and how to seek further medical attention. Care is delivered holistically, recognising the psychological, social, and cultural factors that influence health. The GP works collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, contributing to shared decision-making, clinical governance, and continuous quality improvement, while maintaining accurate, timely, and confidential clinical records in accordance with professional and regulatory requirements.
