About

A general physician (or general practitioner, GP) is a doctor whose medical training and practice are not limited to a narrow specialty. They are trained to treat a wide variety of medical issues across many body systems. Their care can span all ages — from children to older adults — depending on the practice (some GPs focus on adults, some on family medicine, etc.). They often serve as a first point of contact in the healthcare system: you go to them first when you’re sick, feel unwell, or need a general health check. 🩺 What does a general physician do A general physician’s responsibilities are broad and may include: Health assessments and examinations — taking medical/family history, performing physical exams. Diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of illnesses, from acute conditions (like infections, minor injuries or common diseases) to chronic health issues (like hypertension, diabetes, asthma, etc.). Ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests (e.g. blood tests, imaging, other labs) when needed to identify health issues. Prescribing medications or other treatments, and creating plans for recovery or long-term care. Preventive care and health education — immunizations, routine health screenings, lifestyle counselling (diet, exercise, disease prevention), and general advice to maintain health. Chronic disease management — ongoing monitoring and management of long-term conditions to prevent complications. Referrals to specialists when a patient needs more specialized care beyond the scope of general medicine. Continuity of care — they may follow patients over time, through different health episodes, building a long-term doctor-patient relationship, which helps with early detection and better outcomes. 🌍 Why general physicians matter They provide comprehensive and accessible healthcare for many — acting as the first line of defense and everyday care provider for individuals and families. They play a key role in prevention and health maintenance, helping catch diseases early, managing chronic conditions, and advising on healthy lifestyle. They help coordinate care — deciding when to treat directly and when to refer to a specialist if needed, which helps avoid unnecessary treatments and tailor care to each patient’s needs.
